The Digital Services Act package

New opportunities to deliver digital services across borders will be made possible for the first time by a common set of rules on intermediaries’ responsibilities and accountability across the single market, while also ensuring a high level of protection for all users, regardless of where they reside in the EU.

The Digital Market Act and the Digital Services Act combine to provide a single set of regulations that are applicable throughout the EU. Their two main objectives are:

  • to promote a level playing field to encourage innovation, growth, and competitiveness, both in the European Single Market and internationally.
  • To create a safer online environment where the basic rights of all users of digital services are protected.

The digital transition has numerous advantages, but it also has drawbacks. The internet trading and exchange of unlawful goods, services, and content is a major source of worry. Internet services are increasingly being abused by deceptive algorithmic algorithms to distribute misinformation more widely and for other negative ends. Online fundamental rights are significantly impacted by these issues and how platforms handle them.

The goals of the Digital Services Act and Digital Markets Act are to make the internet a safer place where users’ fundamental rights are upheld and to level the playing field for commercial enterprises.
