The Commission aims to empower people to fully embrace the opportunities of the digital decade. To achieve this, it has proposed a set of European digital rights and principles that align with EU values and foster a sustainable, human-centric approach to digital transformation.
The declaration has been endorsed by the Presidents of the Commission, the European Parliament, and the Council, signifying the shared political commitment of the EU and its Member States to promote and implement these rights and principles across all aspects of digital life.
These European digital rights and principles will complement existing rights, such as data protection, ePrivacy, and the Charter of Fundamental Rights. Drawing on the experiences of the European Pillar of Social Rights, they will serve as a guiding framework for the EU and its Member States as they adapt to the challenges and opportunities presented by the digital transformation.
The 6 themes at the core of EU Digital Rights and Principles
The principles are shaped around 6 themes:
- Putting people and their rights at the centre of the digital transformation
- Supporting solidarity and inclusion
- Ensuring freedom of choice online
- Fostering participation in the digital public space
- Increasing safety, security and empowerment of individuals
- Promoting the sustainability of the digital future
